Scooper just got a pretty hefty upgrade in the v2 release. The v2 version adds a new ability to export any data from a CrunchBase API call to Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets (as a .CSV file.)  It also majorly beefs up the amount of data it exported for any company.  Instead of just returning the first level data, it now will include all columns, even if they may have multiple records as well (e.g. funding_rounds, current_team, etc.)

Other improvements in V2

  • New config.ini file that allows you to easily reuse your service IDs across different instances
  • CrunchBase plugin improvements:
    • Automatically fetches extended data about every funding_round and acquisition relationship for an organization or other API object
    • Automatically retrieves and merges data for paged result data from an API call
    • Switched to the CrunchBase v2.0 API
  • Added Composer dependency management settings
  • Improved error handling so that bulk runs don’t exit when a single record fails
  • Tons of other bug fixes

What is Scooper?

DownloadScooper-Github-medIf you don’t know the script, Scooper lets you export CrunchBase.com and Moz.com data to a comma-separated values (CSV) file right from the Mac OS/X command line.  It’s a great tool to have around if you’re doing company research, especially on any startups in the U.S.   One of my favorite uses, for example, is to pull down info about a list of competitors to a particular company so I can quickly understand the landscape.
